Alchemists are probably my favorite class in 2E. I love the versatility and the way they support and feel useful in all 3 pillars of a TTRPG. That said, I struggle to identify an optimized free archetype as well. Wizard or witch seems ideal due to Int casting, but it doesn’t feel like it adds what an alchemist lacks.
