If a new hybrid rav4 is $35k and lasts 200k+ miles, 5k for that car is ok if you need a car today and have a backup car, because all the surprise mechanical issues will emerges towards the end of a cars life. I usually drive alone, and am short so even something smaller like Subaru Crosstrek or Corolla Cross Hybrid would work for me. I was willing to shell out extra for a RAV4 hybrid because of its reliability and overall great build quality but this cable corrosion issue has got me worried. The RAV4 feels like it sits up a little higher and the Forester feels zippier, but the specs are pretty damn close. I chose the Forester after having one for a rental and he chose the RAV4 because he got a good deal through Costco. Thanks, teampsyduck. Further research reveals that the RAV4 (non-plug in) hybrid, does need a bit more driver/owner 'attention' than the gas model, in terms of cleaning various filters, and making sure to run the car regularly so the battery does not go flat.

Go with the corrolla. RAV4 Hybrid. It's physically shorter by a couple of inches front to back than the Corolla, which makes maneuvering in the city easier. The suspension will handle bad roads better than the Corolla. It's much quieter and doesn't give much up on MPG to the Corolla. It'll be a much less tiring drive.
