Lot of hem onc programs like to train fellows for academic oriented careers but fellows do go for practice as well and practice will be a mix of oncology and mostly benign hematology; malignant hematology tends to be handled in academics typically. 3 hem/onc docs I know, work 4 days a week but plus they cover consult like ~10weeks/yr. Dr#1 has private office, infusion center, about 10yrs in business, everything runs smoothly. 2nd. Private office but no infusion center, about retiring age. 3rd. Lifestyle as attendng: hemonc have more controlled hours with more out pt practice/less stressful cases than non invasive cards. Less chances of law suites. Financially, heme onc probably makes 1.5-2x more than Hospitalist. Money is not too important to me and I feel like I would be very happy already with a $250k+ Hospitalist salary working half of the year.
