From what I gather, you might need to buy a different magazine cap that has a rounded pin to index the heat shield, rather than the flat-ended cylindrical pin that features a groove to hold the barrel-clamp assembly. Norinco trench models can still be had in the US on the second hand market for ~$700, but at that price you can buy an original 1897 and do the conversion with a repro heat shield and bayonet lug yourself. This is coming from someone who owns a Norinco repro. It functions just fine, but they aren't worth the price they are going for anymore.

I do have data on several GHD marked guns that have heat shields with 6 rows of cooling holes in the 935,000 to 939,999 serial number range. By about the 942,000 serial number range almost every 97 trench gun has the later type heat shield with 4 rows of cooling holes. Hope this helps.
