I have aquired a Walther P38 9mm which says Carl Walther Waffenfabrik Ulm/Do with an eagle which has an "N" underneath it followed by P38 Cal. 9mm on the slide. The same insignia on the front of the trigger gaurd and above that the serial# which is 002884E. Its still in its original case.Walther is still Europe's premier gun maker, and the Walther P-38/P1 was their top-of-the-line premium service gun. Don't know how you get the exact date but the year is listed on the side of the slide or if you follow that link the marks and code are on the picattiny rail. In this case it's 2022. On the side of the frame, you should also find "DE 202#" where DE = Deutschland, 202# = year of production. Mine says "DE 2022", so it was made in Germany in 2022.

My gun is a PPK/S, Blue and one side does say "Made in the USA". If the S/N information you gave me is correct the gun dates to before 1983, I think! Off to the range this week to give it a spin.

Based on the serial number and markings you have a surplus Bundeswehr Model P1 that was originally manufactured in the late 1950's - early 1960's. . On a military P38/P1 the frame, slide, and barrel are considered to be repair parts. When a major component is replaced the new one is stamped with the original serial number.
