Here's how I use lock picks. It has a 100% success rate, too. Sell your lockpicks to the trader, smelt the dukes to make bullets, and use a pick axe to break open the locked item. The highest one I've ever had to break open was I think 8000hp, and it took about 4 minutes to break open. I think it was 70 hits.
